As outlined in the Fourteenth Amendment, no state may make laws that deprive anyone of “equal protection of the laws” as described in the United States Constitution. Additionally, in conjunction with the Fifth Amendment, the Fourteenth Amendment guarantees equal treatment by the government.
This means that the government may not discriminate against individuals when they are applying to government-sponsored programs, or in hiring and employment practices. Any singling out and discrimination due to race, religion, gender, alienage, ethnicity or any other such classification is a violation of civil rights.
