Black Female NYPD IAB Detective Files Discrimination Lawsuit

NEW YORK, December 6, 2013 – New York Civil Rights Attorney Eric Sanders, Esq., of The Sanders Firm, P.C., alleges the NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau is an inept racially and sexually charged corrupt ‘Good Ole Boys’ network operating without any real government oversight.

According to the federal complaint, Retired Detective Second Grade Shirley V. Pelage claims throughout her assignment in the NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau from July 2, 1999 through her retirement on April 13, 2013, under Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly and Bureau Chief Charles V. Campisi the ‘Bureau’ operated as an inept corrupt ‘Good Ole Boys’ network protected and condoned by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and the New York City Council without any governmental oversight. Since she and other similarly situated African-American Females Officers have rebuffed this ‘Good Ole Boys’ network, they encounter a race and gender based hostile work environment on a daily basis.

As a result of her and other similarly situated African-American Male and Female employees’ rejecting the ‘Good Ole Boys’ and other related conduct, they were not promoted consistently as Caucasian employees’ nor given preferred assignments, says Mrs. Pelage.

“Hopefully, Mayor-Elect Bill deBlasio and incoming Police Commissioner William J. Bratton will engage is a long serious top-to-bottom review of the NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau. We suggest starting with immediately replacing Bureau Chief Charles V. Campisi. NYPD employees’ have a legal right to be treated with courtesy, professionalism and respect. They also have a legal right to fairly compete for promotions and preferred assignments irrespective of race and gender. They certainly do not lose their civil rights because they are Department employees.” Eric Sanders says.

Mrs. Pelage filed her amended federal complaint in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. The name of the case is SHIRLEY V. PELAGE v. THE CITY OF NEW YORK, ET AL., Docket No.: 13 cv 6163 filed on December 6, 2013.
